FOLLOWING YEARS OF PLANNING the Mobile Eye Hospital (MEH), traveling by boat, reached its destination in Yerevan on Nov. 7, 2002.  An amazing piece of equipment the MEH travels throughout Armenia to remote villages delivering eye care to nearly 50,000 people each year.  It is a fully functional surgical suite on wheels. Its statistics are impressive—weighing just a little under 14 tons, the MEH is 48 feet long, 13½  feet wide.  Supplied with the latest eye care equipment, within its 408 square feet are two examination rooms, each 7 feet by 8 feet, and an 8 foot by 20 foot operating room.

DEDICATED TO ELIMINATING PREVENTABLE BLINDNESS in all Armenians since we first began our medical missions in 1992, education is the cornerstone of our project. The AECP Medical Education and Training Program—designed to increase Armenia’s capacity to deliver high-quality ophthalmologic care throughout the country—has evolved from our early days with U.S. doctors providing training twice a year to our current multi-faceted program that includes fellowships; continuing education programs; international medical conferences and seminars; and the USAID family physician training program.

USAID AND THE ARMENIAN EYECARE PROJECT PARTNERED in 2004 with the award of a $750,000 grant to integrate primary and ophthalmologic health care in Armenia. “The Primary and Ophthalmological Health Care Alliance,” is a joint USAID-AECP effort designed to increase the utilization of sustainable, high-quality primary healthcare services in Armenia and ultimately, to eliminate preventable blindness in Armenia. The grant was renewed in 2007 and goes through 2011.

SHE HAS TALENT, ACHIEVEMENTS AND ASPIRATIONS and she has lived with Glaucoma since the age of three. Her life has been filled with surgeries, treatment, and check-ups, but her optimism and her perseverance have never let her down. Despite her limited sight Gohar is a successful concert performer in great demand. Her gentle voice and invigorating nature mesmerizes her audiences and she consistently receives standing ovations.

THE AECP LOW VISION CLINIC OPENS A NEW WORLD for the visually impaired with computer technology having removed many of the obstacles to education and employment. At the Low Vision Clinic Naira Karapetyan, 21, discovers life by reading books transcribed into Braille—a system that enables blind and partially sighted people to read and write through touch.

VERGINE REVAZYAN, 5, born in a small village Chochkan in Lori region of Armenia had a severe case of congenital strabismus in addition to numerous neurological and behavioral problems. Vergine was one of the children with strabismus identified by the AECP in its efforts to address strabismus, one of the major children’s health problems in Armenia.
